Quand le gouvernement égyptien lance un appel d'offres en 1869 pour établir un phare au bout du canal de Suez, M. Bartholdi propose d'ériger la statue d'une femme drapée portant une torche, incarnant "l'Egypte apportant la lumière à l'Asie".
